Reverence for the Lord

Exodus 20:20 – “’Don’t be afraid,’ Moses said, ‘for God has come in this way to show you His awesome power. From now on, let your fear of Him keep you from sinning!’”

As stated in previous devotionals, “fearing the Lord” refers to great reverence for God that leads us to seek to please and honor Him in all we do, think, and say. Consequently, genuine fear of the Lord is seen in obedience to God’s Word.

Proverbs 8:13 – “To fear the LORD is to hate evil.”

Recently I have noticed that since I have been placing other things before God and not giving Him first priority in my life, I have been showing God that my reverence for Him is lacking. It is crazy how easy it is to get distracted by life and leave God ten steps behind!!

I heard a great message last night at a young adult service where the pastor made the statement that when we stop seeking God, His Word, and His guidance in prayer, it is as if we are saying, “It’s alright God, I got this one.” How humbling is this?! Obviously we probably do not feel this way, but how true it is that we are giving God this message when we leave Him out of our lives.

Today I pray that we will realize our need for the Lord’s work in our lives and acknowledge His power so much that it leads us to a deep-rooted fear for Him.
